Now in its sixth year, the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing Studies recently released a call for proposals (CFP) to invite undergraduate students to participate in the workshop. The three-day workshop will take place at York College of Pennsylvania from September 25-27, 2020.
At the workshop, undergraduate students will participate in sessions and work closely with mentors who help them hone their project’s focus. Participants learn a variety of research methods and leave the workshop with a clear path forward in their research as well as a stronger understanding of the field’s work. Projects can be at any stage of development.
“This year, we have decided to place special emphasis on the work of equity in our field and its research. Our theme is “Undergraduate Research’s Role in Promoting Social Justice: Expanding Methods for Studying Race and Cultural Identity in Writing Studies,” said Dr. Dominic DelliCarpini, the Naylor Endowed Professor of Writing Studies at York College of Pennsylvania.
According to the theme, undergraduate researchers can submit proposals for their work on race, gender, sexuality, class, dis/ability, coloniality, and the intersections among these constructs as they might relate to any area of writing studies. However, students may also submit proposals with related areas of focus, such as literacy, the teaching and tutoring of writing, discourse analysis, rhetorical criticism, cultural studies, performance studies, communication and media studies, and technical/professional writing, among several other potential areas.
Undergraduate students invited to the workshop will receive free room, food, registration, and funding to defray travel costs. Over the last five years, the workshop has invited over 140 students and mentors from across 40 states. Participants have gone on to present at conferences, publish their work, and have impact on their campuses and communities.
Interested in submitting a proposal for the workshop? Check out the full CFP for details, meet with your WRD advisor for guidance, and submit your proposal by the deadline May 31. Feel free to address any questions to Dominic DelliCarpini at dcarpini@ycp.edu.
