New Library Spaces Present New Possibilities for WRD

Recently, the John T. Richardson Library here in DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus finished a renovation of the second-floor that features a maker space called the Maker Hub, several media studios called 1581 Studios, and a collaborative work space called The Forum. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are encouraged to use these spaces to create and use many different types of media including video, audio, photography, and computing. In WRD, we are particularly excited about these new spaces, which promise new opportunities for our students and faculty, especially those who are interested in digital and technical writing.

Here’s an update on what some of our MA in NMS and MA in WRD students, graduates, and faculty members have been up to in the last six months! MA in NMS Students and Alumni Caroline Bank (2012) works in digital marketing and recently began to manage Halo Top Creamery’s digital marketing program in-house. She is focused on international expansion after Halo Top became the best-selling ice cream in America over the summer. Annette Vee Encourages Audience to “Keep Coding Weird”

On October 13, Annette Vee presented “Coding for Everyone: What Does it Mean to Call Computer Programming a Literacy?” Hosted by the department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse, the audience for this event included undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty from both WRD and NMS, as well as students and faculty from fields like Computer Science and English. This event was especially relevant to students in Sarah Read’s WRD 500: Proseminar in WRD, who read and discussed Vee’s article “Understanding Computer Programming as a Literacy” in their ongoing conversations about literacy.

NMS 580: A New Way to Read Old Texts

In Winter Quarter 2016, the MA program in New Media Studies (NMS) will offer NMS 580: Markup and Text Encoding in the Humanities, a core course in the new certificate in Digital Humanities. Though the course has an NMS course number, the instructor, Prof. Antonio Ceraso, hopes it will also draw students from the MA in WRD and humanities disciplines such as English and history—all of whom can benefit from the new tools and perspectives the course offers.

WRD Guest Speaker: Annette Vee

We are pleased to announce that this quarter’s guest speaker will be Annette Vee from the University of Pittsburgh. The event will be held Tuesday, October 13 from 4:20-5:50pm in the Scholar’s Lab on the first floor of the Richardson Library. She will be giving a talk called, “Coding for Everyone: What Does It Mean to Call Computer Programming a ‘Literacy’?”.

Content Strategy for a Cause

In AQ 2013, stu­dents in NMS 509/WRD 530: Mul­ti­me­dia Con­tent Strat­egy part­nered with three non­profit orga­ni­za­tions to explore how organizations can strategically collect and use photographs and video. The course offered students the chance to apply practical and critical readings on content strategy to the real-world cases of their partner organizations. The idea for this course came from Assistant Professor and Director of MA in WRD Lisa Dush’s interest in new media storytelling in organizations.

WRD Graduate Assistant Featured on Zeega

WRD graduate assistant Amy Hubbard’s project, A Ghostly Rendering, was recently featured on the Zeega blog. Zeega is a web publishing tool designed to enable interactive storytelling. “I know that [Zeega] can create complicated documentaries, but I really think the rhetorical power here is in the simple ability to re-envision narratives. Simply put, I’m really excited about this and am eager to see where this technology goes in the future.” Amy was first introduced to Zeega in an NMS digital storytelling course taught by Assistant Professor Lisa Dush.
