Each year, October 20 marks National Day on Writing. This year, WRD teamed up with the Writing Center to celebrate, while starting conversations on campus about the writing we each do in our everyday lives. This celebration was established by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) “to draw attention to the remarkable variety of writing Americans engage in and to help make writers from all walks of life aware of their craft.”
On October 19, WRD students and faculty as well as Writing Center staff hosted a three-hour tabling event in Arts and Letters Hall on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus, engaging passersby to celebrate National Day on Writing with us! Students, faculty, and staff handed out treats and engaged the campus community in conversations about writing through four prompts:
- What is something you wrote today?
- What is your writing tool of choice?
- What is your favorite thing to write?
- Why does writing matter to you?
Over 180 members of the community stopped by to talk about writing with us. Dozens more stopped by to grab candy on their way to class, and 70 people completed writing prompts! Check out a few of their answers below.
Thank you to all who joined WRD and the Writing Center to share #WhyYouWrite / #WhyIWrite for National Day on Writing 2023!
