An associate professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Tulane, his most recent scholarly work explores the potentials of Lacanian psychoanalysis as a resource for thinking about undergraduate education and, in particular, the development of writing abilities. The focus of Johnson’s talk will be “Teaching Prose Style: Why and How.”

Social Justice and Writing: Angela M. Haas to Visit DePaul

Join us on Tuesday, March 10 at 6pm (reception at 5:30pm) in McGowan South 104 as WRD welcomes Professor Angela M. Haas from Illinois State University. An Associate Professor of rhetoric and technical communication, her research and teaching focus on working toward social justice in diverse local and global work places and learning spaces. Haas is also an affiliate faculty member in ethnic, Native American, and women’s and gender studies. The focus of her talk will be “Social Justice Writing Practices & Pedagogies.”

Do you need to build an online portfolio? Whether you’re applying for jobs, polishing your resume, or simply completing a portfolio class assignment, the WRD and NMS Grad Assistants are here to make your job a little bit easier. Stop by the WRD Invention Lab (SAC 302) this Thursday, November 13, from 5:00-5:50 pm to learn more about portfolio platforms and best practices. The workshop will also review sample portfolios of recent graduates to see how they best highlighted their skills and abilities.

Event Review: Stuart Selber on “Teaching and Learning in a Digital Age”

On October 21, Dr. Stuart Selber presented “Teaching and Learning in a Digital Age: Agents, Infrastructures, Pedagogies” to WRD students and faculty. In attendance at the event were students from both the WRD Proseminar and the NMS Proseminar, who have been reading Selber’s monograph Multiliteracies for a Digital Age. In his talk, Selber explored the ways current technologies set the social scene for teaching writing, rhetoric, and discourse to students at colleges and universities. Selber began by discussing commonly accepted characteristics of today’s students and the technologies and infrastructures that inform their reading and writing practices. Spread the WoRD 2014: Conference Recap

Spread the WoRD, the sixth annual student conference, was a huge success thanks to the participation of MA in WRD and MA in NMS graduate students, WRD undergraduate students, friends, family, and WRD faculty. The conference was held in Courtelyou Commons on May 17, and approximately 100 individuals attended throughout the day. Attendees enjoyed a light breakfast and lunch and participated in a Jeopardy-style trivia game on the topics of rhetoric and new media.

Liberal Arts and the 21st Century Job Market

Have you ever wondered how the study of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse may be parleyed into a career? Perhaps you’ve questioned how Foucault’s insights will help you navigate the 21st century job market. Maybe you spent four years as a liberal arts undergrad, alternately reading great texts and answering the dreaded “what will you do with that degree?” question. On Tuesday, March 11, DePaul’s school of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences attempted to bridge the worlds of Liberal Arts and Career Preparation with a discussion led by Student Affairs admin Matthew Rust of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Chris Thaiss Presents “Writing Programs Worldwide”

On April 16, Dr. Chris Thaiss presented “Writing Programs Worldwide: The Present and Future of the WAC/WID Mapping Project” to WRD students and faculty. In his presentation, Thaiss presented findings from his research on mapping Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing in the Disciplines (WID) programs across the world. Through his research, Thaiss aimed to determine the prevalence of WAC and WID programs in higher education, reveal trends in these programs, and evaluate how the programs have changed over time.
