NOTE: This post is written by GA Delasha Long. This past quarter, I attended and presented at my first academic conference, The Conference on Community Writing (CCW). The CCW is a three-day conference that explores how communities write and how writing can be used for community organizing and change. The 2017 conference was held at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Students, instructors, and community organizers from all over the country participated in panels, talks, workshops, and think tanks. Topics ranged from “The Prison Story Project: On the Row”—which provides writing workshops for inmates and converts their writings into theater scripts

WRD Alumni Spotlight: Molly Rentscher
Molly Rentscher is the latest alumna to be featured in the WRD Spotlight series. She graduated in 2015 with a Master’s in Writing, Rhetoric, & Discourse. Currently, Molly works as a writing center coordinator at Arizona State University. What have you been doing professionally since you earned your degree? Here’s an update on what some of our MA in NMS and MA in WRD students, graduates, and faculty members have been up to in the last six months! NMS Students and Alumni Yasmin Alesia (2016) switched careers from the advertising to the tech industry. With the help of her NMS degree, she has started a new job as a UX/UI Designer for Rand McNally. Yasmin is the main designer for OverDryve, Rand McNally’s biggest and upcoming consumer electronic device for the connected car industry. Laura Collins (2013) shared her artwork in the exhibit The Olsen Twins Hiding From The Paparazzi at the THINK1994 Museum in New York City.

We recently spoke with Kevin Lyon and Bridget Wagner, both alumni of the MA in WRD program who now work in Faculty Instructional Technology Services (or “FITS”) at DePaul. Kevin and Bridget are two of several MA in WRD alum who are now putting their degrees into practice at FITS! FITS isn’t the only DePaul experience Kevin and Bridget share: Both worked as peer tutors in the University Center for Writing-based Learning (UCWbL) and currently teach classes in DePaul’s First-Year Writing program. We are excited to announce the three alumni speakers who will join us at the Spread the WoRD Conference on May 16! As panelists in a moderated discussion, Nicole Anderson, Liz Lane, and Adrienne Vitt will share about their time at DePaul and their work post-graduation. Nicole Anderson is a 2013 graduate of the MA in WRD program and a recipient of the Graduate Certificate in TESOL. She currently travels around the world as Associate Director of International Alumni Programs at the University of Chicago, and, before that, she applied her WRD knowledge developing curricula for non-profit professional organizations.
