Katie O’Dea Katie O’Dea has served as the Director of Communications at Latin School of Chicago for the past eight years. In her role, she is responsible for managing the strategic development, integration and implementation of all aspects of the school’s communications program including content creation, design, production, media relations and social media.

Profit from the Nonprofit Experience: Melissa Frazin

Meet Melissa Frazin, a nonprofit professional who will be presenting at “Profit from the Nonprofit Experience” on Tuesday, September 24th. Melissa Frazin Melissa (Missy) Frazin is a Site Manager for the Jumpstart Program at DePaul University. In her role, Frazin is responsible for co-facilitating the DePaul Jumpstart program of approximately 80 college students, including recruitment, training, and managing partnerships with seven Headstart centers in Chicago. She co-manages day-to-day operations of Jumpstart and including responsibility for insuring high-quality implementation and encouraging growth.

Meet Chris Jones, a nonprofit professional who will be presenting at “Profit from the Nonprofit Experience” on Tuesday, September 24th. Chris Jones Chris Jones is the Public Affairs Associate at Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, an independent, social policy research organization.  Previously he was the Publications Coordinator at the Steans Center at DePaul University. He graduated DePaul in 2011 with an M.A. in New Media Studies, and in 2007 graduated with a B.S. in Advertising in his hometown of Champaign at the University of Illinois.

Students Present Recent Research in Rhetoric and New Media

Spread the WoRD, the fifth annual WRD student conference, was a huge success in part to a large number of presenters, their friends and family, and the support of WRD faculty and staff. This year’s conference was attended by approximately 80 people, double the number of guests who attended in 2012. Special thanks to graduate assistants and conference organizers: Amy Hubbard, Tasha Sookochoff, Hilary Conlisk, and Megan McCarthy.

First-Year Writing Students Published in New York Times

It’s not every day a student gets to see their work printed in the New York Times, but Michael Moore’s WRD 104 students are at it again. During spring quarter Emily Daniel and Marisa Coulter both had their responses published in the Letter to the Editor section of the Times. Moore’s 104 students write letters according to the Times guidelines as part of their coursework.

Recent graduate, Chad Seader, MAWRD 2013, shared with us how he customized the MAWRD program to help him achieve his academic goals and what he’ll be doing as a post-graduate. Q: What was your academic and professional background prior to entering WRD? Directly before entering MAWRD, I had completed my BA in Philosophy for Northeastern Illinois University, but in my last year at NEIU I decided to switch over to rhetoric and composition for my graduate education.
